The Welshman left following the 2021 play-off final, but an ambitious return could be on the cards.

Swansea City fan-favourite Andy Robinson has said he "would love" to see Steve Cooper back in the Swansea dugout, as the Welsh club continue to search for a new manager.

Luke Williams was relieved of his duties as Swansea manager on February 17, with Darren Witcoop outlining that Ryan Mason, Des Buckingham and Rob Edwards would be among those considered to take Williams' place at the Swansea.com Stadium.

However, Andy Robinson, who made over 200 appearances in a Swansea shirt between 2003 and 2008, has backed a return for former manager Cooper, although he admits it would be ambitious.

The 43-year-old left Swansea at the culmination of the 2021/22 season, leading the side to a play-off finish in each of his two seasons in charge.

With the Swans flirting with the bottom three as of late, Robinson feels that Cooper could be the man to steer the ship for the remainder of this campaign, before attempting to take Swansea back to the top flight for the first time since the 2017/18 season.

Speaking to the BBC, former Swansea City man Andy Robinson sang the praises of Steve Cooper when questioned over who the new man in the dugout would be following Luke Williams' departure.

"There's a man there who did an absolute worldy of a job at the football club, Steve Cooper," he said.

"Whether he'd drop down a level, I'd love to see him back at the football club but that's very ambitious."

Upon departing Swansea, he helped Nottingham Forest secure promotion to the Premier League, keeping them there for a season until he was sacked in their second season in the top flight.

He returned to work at Leicester City at the start of this season, but left the club after just 12 games, with the club 16th in the Premier League.

Cooper hasn't managed in the Championship since he secured promotion with Forest in 2022. A return to the second tier could prove beneficial in getting the Welshman's managerial career back on track and, although ambitious, where better to do it than at Swansea City?

Swansea chairman has to "get it right now," says Robinson

Nevertheless, Robinson believes that chairman Andy Coleman needs to get the appointment right, to avoid losing faith in the Swansea fanbase.

He went on to say: "They need to make sure now that the new boss coming in is the right one because it's been drastic at the football club now for two or three years.

"I think the biggest thing about the structure and the make-up of the football club is a trust element. [...] When you lose that at a football club it's a difficult one to get back.

"You thought Luke Williams was going to be the man, but Coleman has just got to get it right now. For the football club to move forward [it] has to be done correctly."

Swansea has yet to finish higher than 10th since their back-to-back play-off campaigns. They currently reside in 17th, and if they stay there come the end of the season, they will be facing their lowest league position since their days in League 1, 17 years ago.

For a side that spent seven consecutive seasons in the Premier League, fans will be fearful of settling as a mid-table Championship side.

Whether Steve Cooper returns to the club, or the new manager appointment comes from elsewhere, Swansea fans will be hopeful that whoever replaces Williams will be given the opportunity to help them return to the Premier League.
