If Schalke goalkeeper Alexander Nübel is seriously considering moving to Bayern Munich this season, Sven Ulreich perhaps isn’t the best person to ask for advice.

Nübel has been one of the few bright spots in Schalke’s disappointing season this year and with his current contract set to expire in 2020, rumours have circulated in recent weeks suggesting he could be heading to Bavaria this summer.

But current Bayern back-up goalkeeper Ulreich can’t understand why the 22-year-old would give up being the number one at the Veltins Arena to sit on the bench at Bayern.

“I do not think that Alexander Nübel wants to come here as number two, if he can play at Schalke,” Ulreich told SportBild.

“I do not think he wants to sit behind Manu [Neuer] at the age of 22,” said Ulreich.

“If he would come, he wants to play. That’s why, in my view, that makes no sense.”

Last week, the internet was awash with speculation that Manuel Neuer was set to announce his retirement when the 33-year-old called a surprise press conference.

But Neuer laughed off those suggestions and it seems that as long as he feels fit, he will be considered the number one at the Allianz Arena.

Both Neuer and Ulreich are under contract until 2021 meaning a new goalkeeper is far from a priority this summer, and Ulreich has put forward another reason why the Nübel rumours don’t make much sense.

“We also have a very good young goalkeeper with Christian Früchtl,” he added.

Früchtl’s current contract expires in June 2020 but the club are reportedly soon going to offer the 19-year-old an extension.

However, there has also been talk that he could be sent out on loan next season, with Augsburg and Fortuna Düsseldorf understood to be just two of the interested parties.
