Sutton United boss Matt Gray is a contender for the vacant Charlton Athletic job.

The Addicks hierarchy made the decision to sack Nigel Adkins in the week after a 3-2 defeat at home to Accrington Stanley made it eight defeats from 13 in the league, leaving the side in the relegation zone and already four points from safety.

Johnnie Jackson is currently leading the team ahead of tomorrow’s game against high-flying Sunderland, with the former player thought to be in the running for the role on a permanent basis if he does well.

However, Football Insider have claimed that Gray is another under serious consideration, with his work at Gander Green Lane having caught the eye of key figures at The Valley.

The 39-year-old was the man who took Sutton United to the Football League for the first time in their history as they won the National League last season, whilst they have adapted to life in the fourth tier very well, as they currently sit in 8th place at this early stage.

The verdict

This would be a very bold move as it’s a big jump from Sutton United to Charlton in terms of the pressure and expectation that comes with managing the latter.

But, you can certainly see why Gray is a target, because the work he has done in the past 18 months or so has been fantastic, so it’s no surprise that he is now on the radar of bigger clubs.

Ultimately, Charlton can’t afford to get this appointment wrong, so it will be interesting to see what happens in the coming weeks.
