Leeds United were interested in Bayern Munich's Eric Dier, although the defender is expected to join Monaco in the summer.
Leeds United made a move to sign Bayern Munich’s Eric Dier, although the defender is set to join AS Monaco ahead of next season.
The former Spurs man joined the German giants on an initial loan in January 2024, and his move was made permanent.
Despite plenty of competition for his place, Dier has featured regularly for Vincent Kompany’s side this season, and he is sure to be involved against RB Leipzig this weekend, when Bayern Munich could win the Bundesliga.
However, with his contract at the Allianz Arena running down, there has been talk about Dier’s future.
Recent reports have claimed the 31-year-old will join Monaco, with the French club offering him an initial two-year deal with the option to extend.
Yet, it seems he did have the chance to return to the Premier League, as TBR Football revealed that Leeds were among the clubs to make contact with the defender about a move.
They state that the newly-promoted Whites, along with Brentford, Brighton and West Ham, among others, all registered an interest in the player, but he is set to continue his career abroad.
Dier has impressed in Munich, so this would have been a real coup for Leeds if they had managed to bring him back to the Premier League.
Whilst it’s a transfer that isn’t happening, it is encouraging for Leeds fans that they are targeting this calibre of player.
It’s clear the owners will need to invest to help the side stay in the top-flight, and bringing in players who have been there and done it will help.
This Leeds squad has a lot of talent, but it’s not packed with players who have Premier League experience. And, those that do may not have the best memories of playing at that level.
So, even though the priority is going to be improving the group and finding value in the market, it would be beneficial if they could add more know-how to the squad, and Dier fits the bill in that sense, and his ability to play in various positions would have also been welcomed by Daniel Farke.
It will be interesting to see what business Leeds do get done over the next few months, although the immediate priority for Farke and the players is securing the Championship title by beating Plymouth Argyle at Home Park on Saturday.
