As reported by Argentine outlet La Nacion, South American footballing authorities are increasingly confident that a group of countries on the continent are the favourites to host the 2030 World Cup.

After the 2022 tournament in Qatar, the World Cup moves on to North America in 2026 with Mexico, Canada and the USA scheduled to host the competition. The location of the 2030 tournament has yet to be decided, however, but CONMEBOL president Alejandro Domínguez is continuing to push the idea that the competition’s centenary should be held on the continent where the first edition was held in 1930 when Uruguay hosted the tournament. Domínguez explained:

“The candidacy is very solid. On the 2030 World Cup, FIFA have to decide what they’re going to do. It is the responsibility of FIFA and the football family to decide how and what we are going to do to remember those who made that first World Cup. There will always be an opportunity for other countries after 2030, when we celebrate 100 years of the World Cup, but that 100th anniversary can only come once and it has to be in South America.”
