DFB-Pokal holders Borussia Dortmund were made to work by 2.Bundesliga side FC Ingolstadt but scraped through to the last-16 courtesy of a Thorgan Hazard brace.
Scorers: Hazard 72′, 81′.
It looked as if it was going to be a long night for the hosts as Ingolstadt frustrated Marco Rose’s side in their search for a breakthrough.
Jude Bellingham forced the best opportunity of the first half, striking the crossbar with an effort from the edge of the box.
The woodwork was to be BVB’s nemesis again as Steffen Tigges was then denied by the post as the score remained goalless midway through the second half.
But into the last 20 minutes and the cavalry, and the goals finally came.
Marco Reus and Thorgan Hazard were called from the bench and it was the latter who was the Westfalenstadion hero.
The Belgian turned Julian Brandt’s pass across goal into the back of the net to give Dortmund the lead before getting in behind the back to poke a cross from the same player to complete his double.
