Record upon record is being broken this summer as fans flock to Euro 2022 in historic numbers.
The tournament was just at the halfway stage, with 16 of 31 games played, as it became the most attended women’s Euros in history during the group stage.
A crowd of 8,173 at France 2-1 Belgium took the tournament’s total attendance beyond the record of 240,055 set in the Netherlands back in 2017.
That followed a record crowd for a women’s Euros game when 68,871 turned up at Old Trafford to see England beat Austria in the tournament opener and the record crowd for a group game not involving the host nation was also broken twice, firstly when 16,819 saw Spain beat Finland and again when 21,342 watched the Netherlands beat Sweden at Bramall Lane.
And the record breaking wasn’t over at the end of the group stage.
On Wednesday, 28,994 set a new quarter-final high as England beat Spain in extra-time.
There’s still more to come too, with Wembley sold out at almost 90,000 tickets for the final. That would see the record for a men’s Euros final broken as well as the record for a women’s final.
The future has begun.
