Dominik Szoboszlai's superb freekick gave Liverpool an important early three points at home to potential title rivals Arsenal.

The defending champions faced tough competition at Anfield in what was a close, compact game that required something special.

It was a difficult start for the Gunners when inside the first five minutes defender William Saliba picked up an injury and had to be replaced by Cristhian Mosquera for his second appearance.

Liverpool briefly thought they had taken the lead with just over an hour gone. Florian Wirtz had a shot that was stopped by David Raya. Cody Gakpo, fresh off his new Liverpool contract, was first on scene with Hugo Ekitiké eventually smashing home.

The goal was ruled out though with Gakpo offside as he picked up the ball before Ekitiké applied the finishing touch.

That moment did liven Anfield up but the home fans had to wait until the 83rd minute when Szoboszlai stood over a freekick around 30 yards in front of the Kop. The Hungarian's effort was inch-perfect and rippled the net with David Raya standing no chance.

That proved to be enough with Liverpool holding on to go top of the Premier League into the international break as the Gunners sit third behind Chelsea.
