Fagiano Okayama secured a landmark 1-0 victory over Sanfrecce Hiroshima in what was billed as the first-ever J1 League "China Derby" between the two Chugoku region clubs.
The decisive moment came in the 58th minute when substitute Ryunosuke Sato, introduced just two minutes earlier, found the net with his first meaningful contribution. The FC Tokyo loanee's finish, assisted by Masaya Matsumoto, proved enough to separate the sides in a tense encounter at Edion Peace Wing Hiroshima.
Despite dominating possession (64%) and creating more chances, Michael Skibbe's Sanfrecce side struggled to convert their territorial advantage into goals. The hosts registered 14 shots but managed just three on target, with goalkeeper Svend Brodersen equal to everything thrown his way.
The result marks Sanfrecce's first home defeat of the season and ends their two-match winning streak, dealing a blow to their title aspirations as they remain in second place.
Fagiano manager T. Kiyama set his team up perfectly to absorb pressure and strike on the counter. The visitors were resolute defensively, with Kota Kudo particularly impressive at the back, winning 9 of 12 duels alongside making two tackles and a crucial block.
Brodersen was the standout performer between the posts, earning a 7.7 rating with three vital saves to preserve his clean sheet.
"The fighting spirit shown by the players today was exceptional," said Kiyama post-match. "To execute our game plan so effectively against such a strong opponent shows how far we've come."
This victory carries special significance for Fagiano in their debut J1 season, marking their first triumph against an established top-flight powerhouse. The club's supporters celebrated the milestone with special "Today's Hero" merchandise featuring match-winner Sato.
For Sanfrecce, midfielder Satoshi Tanaka was a bright spot in defeat, completing 47 passes and winning 7 of 8 duels, while captain Sho Sasaki led by example with four tackles and nine duels won.
Sanfrecce Hiroshima must quickly regroup as they travel to face Nagoya Grampus at Toyota Stadium in their next fixture, looking to maintain their position near the top of the table.
Meanwhile, Fagiano Okayama will aim to build on this momentum when they host Kashima at JFE Harenokuni Stadium, with their mid-table position looking increasingly secure following this statement victory.
