Just like in the first round against Dornbirn, in the second round of the UNIQA ÖFB Cup we took a wonderful win against a regional league side. Our Red Bulls won 4-0 away at SC Wiener Viktoria to secure their spot in the last 16.
We made a start to test the nerves of anyone running a live score update app, as after just 34 seconds of play, Lucas Gourna-Douath had capped a fine attacking move to put our boys 1-0 up. The Frenchman was just a second shy of the fastest-ever goal in the competition. We had only had time to sit back down after his shot took a deflection from Petar Ratkov to go in before the Viktoria net was breached for a second time.
The second goal came from debut boy Edmund Baidoo! The opposing goalkeeper was able to hold onto an effort from the new signing, but the Ghanaian youngster reacted to head the ball over the line (3').
We continued to dominate the first half without much in the way of action. We continued to run the ball around the edge of the Viktoria area to look for gaps through the backline and created a few opportunities for a third.
The hosts only had one real chance in the first half, but it was a significant one. In the 14th minute, Vozenilek broke free of our backline from a ball over the top, but in a one-on-one with Alex Schlager, there was only one winner.
The third goal would come from a Viktoria player - but would go into his own net. We had several chances to make it three in a strong start to the second-half as both Leandro Morgalla (47') and Petar Ratkov (50') could have nabbed the third before it finally came in the 59th minute.
Bobby Clark charged down the left and whipped a cross in that Sinner accidentally poked into his own net (59'). Pepijn Lijnders then made a quadruple substitution as a host of fresh faces supported our attacking endeavours.
Substitute Karim Konate had only been on the pitch for two minutes by the time he made it 4-0 following a brilliant Hendry Blank cross – the game was up, but the chances were not. We continued to create opportunities almost by the minute, but no further goals would come. We got the win we needed though to secure our spot in the last 16.
We will now focus on this Saturday, 28 September, as we host FK Austria Vienna at 17:00 CEST - as we finally return to the Red Bull Arena! Tickets for the Austrian Bundesliga clash can be obtained online in our Ticket Shop.
It is fantastic. I am very happy to have played the first 90 minutes after my injury today! I am pleased that the boys took a lot of the work off my plate. When you get a comfortable lead, it's clear that you can ease up a bit. We are going back home with a clean sheet, and that's what it is all about.
