Sorba Thomas’ rise from playing in non-league football last year to becoming a regular starter for Huddersfield Town is a story with few parallels. While initially he struggled to cope up with the demands of the EFL Championship last season, he has since established himself as a versatile player capable of playing in multiple roles.
Huddersfield Town are currently seventh in the championship table with four wins, one draw and three losses from their last eight matches. They need to rally their form if they are to mount a serious push for the playoff spot and Thomas could just be the man to inspire that form. So far, he has four assists and one goal in eight matches which puts him on a level with John Swift at the top of the assist chart. Huddersfield Town manager Carlos Corberan has utilized Thomas mostly as a wing-back and most recently as a winger in their recent home defeat to Nottingham Forrest. Thomas’ brilliant form also awarded him with Championship’s player of the month for August.

So far Thomas has played in all eight matches in the Championship this season. He has been involved heavily in the build-up phases for his team. His aerial duels and interceptions indicate his ability to contribute to his team during transitions.
Thomas’s attacking and creative metrics are good. His dribbles per 90 and attacking actions per 90 far surpasses the median league average, while his offensive duels per 90 follows a similar suit.
His passing and progression show just how versatile he is in linking up and creating chances for his teammates. His expected assist per 90 and shot assist per 90 are in the 99th percentile, one of the highest in the championship. In addition, he is also effective with his progressive runs.
While his defensive stats aren’t top tier, they still suggest his effectiveness in playing in multiple roles. His aerial duels win and loose ball duels surpass the median league average.
His pass map from this season shows how effective he is in switching his positions between both the flanks. Most of the xT being created from the right flank.
Carlos Corbean recent switch in the formation against Forest indicate that Thomas might be seen in a more attacking role as a winger in the future. He has already displayed on multiple occasions his adeptness in crossing the ball in threatening areas on the field while he can be equally threatening with the ball at his feet running at the opposition defence. Huddersfield Town fans can certainly look towards more improved performances from Thomas.
