Sunderland are said to still be interested in signing Jordan Jones from Rangers this summer, however the Scottish club’s asking price is posing a big problem, as per a recent report by Football Insider.

As stated further in the report, Wigan Athletic have seemingly jumped to the front of the queue to sign the Northern Irishman this summer.

Rangers are said to have informed the 26-year-old that he is free to find himself a new club during the current transfer window, with the Latics now attempting to get a deal done for the winger.

The Black Cats previously had Jones on loan from Ibrox during the 2020/21 season and were said to be keen on making the move permanent.

It is said that Rangers would be willing to let the player leave for a fee of less than £1 million.

Jones hit three goals and notched up four assists in 19 league games at the Stadium of Light last term and was a big hit all round with the club and it’s supporters.

The Verdict

As previously mentioned by Lee Johnson earlier in the month, Sunderland have been operating under strict financial guidelines and it is clear that their approach to transfers has changed as a result of this.

The club are seemingly unable to splash out on high transfer fees because of the impact that the pandemic has had on them and as a result we have seen them bring in more free transfers and loans.

Signing Jones therefore seems like a bit of a pipe dream from their perspective and as a result I could see him signing for a rejuvenated Wigan Athletic this summer.

Sunderland still have plenty of attacking talent at their disposal and in Alex Pritchard they arguably have a ready made replacement for Jones anyway.
