Sunderland have a centre-back on their radar but do not know who to target to add further depth up front with Everton’s Nathan Broadhead set to join Wigan Athletic, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

The Black Cats have been linked with re-signing Broadhead throughout the summer after he scored some vital goals in their 2021/22 League One promotion campaign but reports yesterday indicated that fellow Championship new boys Wigan are set to win the race for him.

Nixon has revealed Sunderland’s plans for the final weeks of the window – with a new defender and an additional forward on their list of priorities.

He has reported that they have a centre-back on their radar but that do not know who they want to target to add depth up top with Broadhead close to a move to the Latics.

Summer arrival Ellis Simms made a strong start to his Sunderland career on the weekend, scoring twice on debut to help Alex Neil’s side claim a 3-2 win over Bristol City, but he and Ross Stewart are the only out-and-out strikers at the club.

The Verdict

Missing out on Broadhead is a frustrating one for Sunderland but supporters will be relieved to hear that the club are going to target another forward before the window closes, as well as a new defender.

There appears to be a centre-back on their radar but it seems they’re yet to decide on a new striker target.

That could mean Neil is not able to add more firepower until the latter stages of the window.

Given the form of Simms and Stewart against City, that’s not a nightmare situation – the Black Cats just have to hope that they can stay fit.
