Sunderland have completed the signing of Dutch forward Iris Achterhof ahead of Sunday’s FA Women’s Championship fixture against Lewes at The Stadium of Light according to reports on the club’s official website.

The 24-year-old moves to Wearside on a free transfer after the player recently came to a mutual agreement to leave former club Durham.

It has been reported that Achterhof has signed an initial one-year agreement with The Lady Black Cats while it is understood that she will represent the club on a ‘non-contract’ basis.

The forward started her senior career with Dutch club Heerenveen where she spent three seasons as a first team player before going on to enjoy spells in America and in the Icelandic top flight. Achterhof joined latest club Durham in 2019 and she went on to score four goals in 15 league appearances. The player’s progress with The Wildcats was hindered by an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury which kept her on the sidelines for the best part of 12 months.

After completing her move to Sunderland, Achterhof said “I’m really excited to join such a big club in Sunderland and I can’t wait for a new challenge. I am looking forward to meeting the girls and everyone at the club, and I’m sure we’ll have a successful season.”

Achterhof is available for immediate selection by Sunderland boss Melanie Reay therefore she could make her debut against Lewes on Sunday.
