Once again, it’s shaping up to be a massive summer for Sunderland, as they prepare for another season in the Championship.

Sunderland’s summer transfer plans

Of course, the major priority for the Black Cats’ hierarchy is bringing in a new boss, and it will be interesting to see who they line up.

But, despite the chaotic past 12 months at the Stadium of Light, the Sunderland job will be an attractive one, and there are sure to be plenty of high-profile candidates in the running.

Whilst the focus will be on the next boss, the summer is also going to be huge when it comes to recruitment.

There is a general acceptance that Jack Clarke is going to be on the move, with the winger having enjoyed another outstanding individual campaign, which is certain to prompt bids from Premier League clubs.

Ronnie Edwards should be a Sunderland transfer target

Yet, it’s not just Clarke that could depart, as it’s been claimed that Everton are tracking influential centre-back Dan Ballard.

The Northern Irish international has been superb this season, and at 24, he is only getting better, so it would be no surprise if the Toffees put down a big bid for Ballard if Jarrad Branthwaite is sold.

Obviously, Sunderland would want to keep Ballard, but you have to be realistic, and part of the strategy of the Wearside club is not standing in the way if suitable offers arrive.

Therefore, the Black Cats need to be considering replacements for Ballard, and Peterborough’s Ronnie Edwards is someone who ticks all the boxes.

At 20, the centre-back has already racked up over 100 appearances in the Football League, which includes a campaign in the Championship, so he is someone who wouldn’t need time to adapt.

Given his age, he also fits the profile Sunderland want, as they have generally targeted players who they can develop and potentially sell-on - such as Ballard.

As a defender, Edwards has many similar qualities to the former Arsenal youngster, as he is brave, positions himself well and relishes the physical side of things. Furthermore, he can also bring the ball out, which is why he is so highly-rated.

Due to those abilities, Edwards has been on the radar of some Premier League clubs, with Newcastle and West Ham among those credited with an interest in the past.

Sunderland can offer first-team football

The appeal of a top-flight move for Edwards is obvious, but the fact he has stayed with the Posh over the past few years shows that he is someone who recognises the importance of playing week in, week out.

And, that could give Sunderland an advantage if they do make a serious move for the player.

Unlike any Premier League club, Edwards would surely be a starter for the Black Cats, and starring in the Championship will be ideal for his development, and he will hope to reach the highest level with Sunderland.

The prospect of losing Ballard is something that will worry fans, and it’s easy to see why.

Ultimately, though, this is part of Sunderland’s approach, and clubs like Brighton and Brentford have shown that you can be successful whilst selling key men.

If Edwards arrived to replace Ballard, along with a hefty profit, it would be a good start for Sunderland as they aim to go down that road.
