Sunderland have reportedly sealed a deal to bring in Graeme Murty as the manager of their Under-21 side, according to Training Ground Guru.

The Black Cats have been linked with him previously and now appear to have landed their man, with the Championship outfit looking to improve every aspect of their club from top to bottom.

They’ve got a new boss at the helm in Tony Mowbray and won’t want to drop immediately back down to League One, having spent so long away from the second tier. They were delighted to seal a promotion and will want to ensure the building blocks are in place to remain there too.

Win Draw Loss

Right now, the club have continued to progress despite Alex Neil leaving them for the Stoke job. They are eighth in the division and will have one eye on the play-off spots. They’re also unbeaten in their last three games and have lost only one of their last five outings too.

Sunderland then are full of confidence right now and will want to work on making sure every aspect of the club is functioning correctly after the turmoil of the last few seasons. They’ll want some of their younger players to come through and develop well and it appears they have turned to Graeme Murty to help them do that.

The coach has previously held the main job at Rangers in Scotland and therefore has a wealth of experience and knowledge to turn to in helping the Black Cats get to where they want to be.

The Verdict

Sunderland have a real chance at the play-offs this year based on their current form and that is despite being only newly-promoted from League One.

It appears the team spirit and the momentum that carried them into the third tier play-offs has continued a level higher and even with a change of management at the top, they are continuing to produce the goods and to pick up plenty of results. If they can keep it consistent over the course of a season, the top six certainly isn’t out of reach.

It’s good to also focus on improving other aspects of the club behind the scenes too and not just the first-team squad and their management. If the club want to continually be successful and to make money, they need to be developing talent of their own and bringing them into the starting eleven.

Adding a manager like Murty can certainly aid with that because he has been a manager at the highest level with Rangers and will know talent when he sees it – as well as knowing how to develop players.
