Sunderland have announced that Elliot Embleton has signed a new long-term deal at the Stadium of Light.

Embleton has been a key player for Lee Johnson’s side as they target a long-awaited return to the Championship this season.

The midfielder has made nine starts in League One, chipping in with two goals and three assists from midfield.

Midway through last season, Embleton was sent on loan to Blackpool, helping the Tangerines win promotion via the play-offs.

But since returning to the Stadium of Light, the 22-year-old has been a key part of Johnson’s plans, and game time has been consistent.

Sunderland have now confirmed that Embleton has signed a new three-and-a-half year deal on Wearside, keeping him at the Stadium of Light until 2025.

His original deal was set to expire at the end of the current campaign, meaning that he could have discussed terms with another club with six months left on his deal in January.

This is really positive news for the club and it is just rewards for a fine campaign so far for Embleton.

The 22-year-old was shipped out on loan midway through last season, which is a decision which surprised many fans.

He helped Blackpool win promotion and showed that he can play well at this level, and he hasn’t looked back since.

A three-and-a-half year deal shows how highly he is rated by the club.
