Sunderland are set to face disappointment in their summer-long pursuit of Caen striker Alexander Mendy, who has decided to stay put at the French club.

The Black Cats have been chasing the forward all summer and have tabled multiple offers to snare him away from northern French side Caen.

Mendy also pushed for the move and believed earlier in the transfer window that a deal was in place for him to join Sunderland, but a change in ownership at the club had an effect.

The striker has been training away from the rest of the squad while hoping for the deal to get through over the last month or so.

However, according to French outlet Foot Mercato, Mendy has finally relented and decided to stay put at Caen.

The new Caen hierarchy have been trying to convince the striker to continue at the club over the last month.

They rejected offers from Sunderland and continued to hold talks with Mendy and his agents to change his mind.

Caen have finally succeeded and with a day left in the transfer window, Mendy has closed the door on leaving the club this summer.
