Sunderland are continuing to search for a new manager, now that the Championship season has come to an end.

The Black Cats began the campaign with Tony Mowbray at The Stadium of Light, but he was sacked back in December 2023 despite the club challenging for a place in the play-offs.

He was replaced by Michael Beale, although he would last just two months before being sacked after a disappointing run of form.

Following the departure of Beale, it was Mike Dodds who was handed the role of interim manager until the end of the season.

However, that would end in disappointing fashion, with Sunderland finishing 16th in the Championship table, just six points clear of the relegation zone.

As a result, many fans will be keen to see a new manager appointed, who can push the Black Cats back towards the top six in the Championship table, with the search for a new boss now having gone on into the summer.

So with that in mind, we've taken a look at the latest news around Sunderland's search for a new manager, right here.

One of the latest names to have been linked with the role at Sunderland is Bo Svensson, who has been out of work since leaving his role with Mainz at the start of November, after almost three years with the club.

However, according to a recent report from journalist Alan Nixon, the 44-year-old is now in contention for the vacant role at the Stadium of Light.

It is suggested that Svensson may be preferred to certain other options over the Black Cats, and that he himself could be tempted to make the move to Championship, in what would be his first job in management in England.

One potential managerial target that Sunderland may now struggle to secure the services of as their long-term replacement for Beale is Rene Maric.

A former Leeds United assistant coach, Maric is currently in charge of Bayern Munich's Under 19s team, having taken on the position earlier this year. It had been suggested that the Black Cats were interested in bringing the 31-year-old to the Stadium of Light, amid supposed interested in a reunion from Leeds.

However, a report from German outlet Tageszeitung has now claimed that Bayern are already looking to secure a new contract for Maric in the wake of those links, which would make it more difficult for Sunderland if they chose to target the 31-year-old as their new boss.

One manager who is already in the Championship who has been identified as potential target for Sunderland in recent months is Danny Rohl.

The German has done a remarkable job in helping to keep Sheffield Wednesday in the second-tier this season, and sealed survival with a 2-0 win over the Black Cats on the final day of the campaign.

However, it has now been reported by The Sheffield Star that any club who want to appoint Rohl as their manager this summer, will have to pay Wednesday £5million in compensation. That is expected to rise to £10million if his staff come as part of the deal as well, meaning the Black Cats will be financially tested if they want to bring the 35-year-old to the Stadium of Light this summer.
