England midfielder Jude Bellingham heaped praise on Sunderland after their impressive win at Cardiff City on Good Friday.
There’s no denying that it has been a disappointing campaign for the Black Cats, who had been hoping to be in the mix for promotion at this stage of the season.
Instead, they’re comfortably in mid-table, with a top six finish looking impossible, and they also can’t get dragged into the relegation mix.
The decision to sack Tony Mowbray in December didn’t work, with Mick Beale lasting two months in charge, before Mike Dodds was named as interim boss.
The former coach didn’t make the impact he would’ve wanted initially, with Sunderland heading to Cardiff having failed to win in seven.
However, they were very good in Wales, with Adil Aouchiche putting the visitors ahead from the spot. Then, Jobe Bellingham made it two after a close range finish following a good move.
It was an outstanding first-half display, as Sunderland looked close to their best, with smart combination play and an intensity to the play.
They didn’t hit the same heights after the break, but they saw the game out with relative ease to send the excellent away support home happy.
And, it’s fair to say he liked what he saw from Sunderland, as he sent a message on social media to praise the whole team after the win.
“Whole team a joy to watch!”
As mentioned, it’s a fair assessment from Bellingham here, as the Wearside outfit were simply too good for Cadiff on the day, and when they do play like that, they are a great watch.
From the perspective of the Sunderland players, even with the family connection, it’s no doubt nice to receive such praise from one of the best in the world.
There has been a spotlight on the younger Bellingham brother since his move to the Stadium of Light from Birmingham City, and it has been a mixed campaign for the 18-year-old.
At times, it’s felt like he has been overused, with the club placing too many demands on someone who is so young.
But, the win against Cardiff was a reminder of just how good Bellingham is, and why he is regarded as one of the most exciting talents in the Football League.
He showed his intelligence to find the right positions, which the Bluebirds struggled to stop, and he is technically assured, whilst Bellingham capped it all off with another goal, to take him to seven for the season.
For his age, that’s an outstanding return, and it’s important to remember that he is still developing both physically and tactically, so there’s much more to come, which should excite fans.
