Sunderland are in talks to sign an attacker who was tipped to be a ‘market man’ this summer due to the level of interest he was expected to generate.
Regis Le Bris has seen Tommy Watson and Jobe Bellingham depart a squad that won promotion up to the Premier League last season.
Midfielder Pierre Ekwah, who was on loan at Saint-Etienne, is also expected to go, with a permanent move to the French club likely.
Now Le Bris is looking towards another Frenchman to come in and bolster Sunderland’s attack, with his eyes on Sassuolo’s Armand Lauriente.
He helped Sassuolo win Serie B in Italy in the recent campaign, was voted the Player of the Season and was tipped to be a ‘market man’ this summer due to the level of interest expected.
Sunderland have now kicked off their efforts to sign the attacker and, according to journalist Matteo Moretto, they are ‘in talks’ with Sassuolo to do a deal.
Le Bris feels that the 26-year-old would be a good addition to his Sunderland attack and the club are trying to deliver.
It is unclear just how much Lauriente might cost Sunderland and losing him would be a big blow for Sassuolo as they prepare to play in Serie A.
The Italian side snapped him up from Lorient, Le Bris’ previous side, in the summer of 2022.
He stayed with Sassuolo when they were relegated into Serie B and then scored 18 goals in the division in the recent campaign to help them get back up to Serie A.
Relishing the chance to play under Le Bris in the Premier League though looks likely to be one that Lauriente will be excited about.
He would join Enzo Le Fee in making the move from Italian football to Sunderland if the deal happens.
