Sunderland are in the hunt to sign midfielder Liam Kelly from Feyenoord in the January transfer window.
The 24-year-old is deemed surplus to requirements at the Dutch club, and Sunderland are one of three English sides reportedly interested in acquiring his services.
MK Dons and Oxford United have also been linked to Kelly, who started his career at Reading before his move to the Netherlands.
Former Royals’ manager Jaap Stam convinced Kelly, who has been capped at U21 level by the Republic of Ireland, to make the move to Rotterdam last summer.
However, Stam has since been replaced by Dick Advocaat as manager of the Eredivisie club and the change in stewardship has seen Kelly frozen out.
Dutch magazine Voetbal International has reported that he is free to leave Feyenoord next month.
Sunderland currently sit 13th in League One, six points off the promotion play-off spots.
