Sunderland considering move for free agent Stewart Downing

Sunderland have reportedly re-entered the race to sign Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing.

Downing is out of contract next month and currently looks unlikely to agree fresh terms with his boyhood club.

According to Teeside Live, the 34-year-old is unsure about dropping down to League One with Championship offers still coming through.

Blackburn and Birmingham have both registered an interest in the winger, as have Scottish Premiership side Rangers.

Talks are ongoing over his future, but Downing could prefer a stay in the north-east to keep his family settled.
