Sunderland have made a major statement in the transfer market with the arrival of Nordi Mukiele from PSG. The France international defender, 27, has signed a four-year contract with the Black Cats after an agreement worth around €12m was reached between the two clubs. Mukiele, who previously shone at RB Leipzig, will wear the No. 20 shirt under head coach Régis Le Bris.
Fresh from their emphatic 3-0 win over West Ham United in the opening match of their Premier League campaign, Sunderland have acted decisively to strengthen their squad. The addition of Mukiele provides top-flight experience, versatility and leadership. The defender has competed at the highest levels in Europe, including the Champions League, and his arrival signals Sunderland’s ambition to establish themselves as a competitive force in their first season back in the Premier League.
Mukiele’s departure from PSG had been expected this summer. Despite his strong pedigree, he was not viewed as a key figure by Luis Enrique. The Spanish manager allowed the full-back to spend last season on loan at Bayer Leverkusen, a move that limited his chances of securing a long-term future in Paris. Although PSG relied heavily on Achraf Hakimi at right-back and face the Moroccan’s absence during the AFCON, Mukiele was still considered surplus to requirements. Emerging talents such as Warren Zaïre-Emery and João Neves were seen as alternatives in that position.
Sunderland’s Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman praised the capture of the Frenchman, emphasising the qualities he brings to the squad. “He’s had a variety of experiences in Europe, including in the Champions League, and now he’s motivated to show his ability for Sunderland AFC in the Premier League“, Speakman explained. “We’re delighted to complete this deal.”
This signing underlines Sunderland’s intent to blend youthful energy with experienced professionals capable of handling the demands of the top division. Mukiele’s adaptability, whether at right-back, centre-back or in a defensive role, will be invaluable across a long campaign. His international experience with France also adds pedigree to a side keen to prove they can match established Premier League clubs.
Sunderland supporters will be excited to see Mukiele in action as the club prepares for a challenging season. His addition not only strengthens the defence but also symbolises a forward-looking strategy from Sunderland’s recruitment team. With their Premier League journey just beginning, the Black Cats have secured a player who is determined to prove himself and help the team build momentum in English football’s top flight.
