The Lady Black Cats announced the news via a post on their official club website this evening.
McAteer joins Sunderland after most-recently turning out for former Barclays Women’s Championship club Coventry United. The 19-year-old signed for The Red and Greens on a dual-registration basis early last season before making the move permanent in the second half of the campaign. McAteer netted three goals in 11 league outings for the Warwickshire club.
There is so much more to come from McAteer and Sunderland will be hoping to reap the rewards after signing the player for the 2023/2024 season.
After joining the Wearside club, McAteer said “I’m buzzing. I’ve been looking forward to this move ever since I agreed it with Mel (Reay). I’m really excited to get started, stay in the Championship and I’m ready to push on.”
McAteer is Sunderland boss Melanie Reay’s first signing of the summer transfer window. The youngster becomes the third player to sign with The Lady Black Cats on a full-time professional basis. Sunderland are operating a hybrid playing model this season with full-time playing opportunities being offered to several players.
