Sunderland have completed the impressive signing of Rangers captain Brianna Westrup ahead of the new season.

The Lady Black Cats announced the deal this evening via a post on their official club website.

Westrup has spent the last two seasons with Glasgow giants Rangers. The defender helped The Gers to win the Park’s Motor Group Scottish Women’s Premier League 1 title last season along with the City of Glasgow Women’s Cup.

Prior to her time with Rangers, Westrup previously represented American college team Virginia Cavaliers, Danish club B93 and English side Newcastle United. Upon her return to the North East, Westrup will be hoping to show how much she has developed as a player over the last couple of years.

After completing her move to Sunderland, Westrup said “I’m absolutely delighted to sign here and I’m really excited to be back in the North East.

“I left in 2020 to join Rangers, and we had a really successful season last year as we won the league for the first time. I feel that it’s the right time now to find a new challenge.

“I’m looking forward to bringing more experience to the squad – it’s always great to see the potential develop of younger players, too, and I’m excited to work with them. I’ve heard great things about Mel (Reay) and Steph (Libbey) for a number of years – they’re a great partnership, and I’m looking forward to being a part of the project here.”

Westrup becomes Sunderland manager Melanie Reay’s fifth signing of the summer transfer window.
