This is according to Fabrizio Romano, who believes the 18-year-old will not be heading south after the Black Cats rejected a financial proposal in the region of £13m.

Brighton have been long-term admirers of the winger, having had bids rejected for the player during the summer transfer window.

A swap deal including the Seagulls' starlet Simon Adingra could have been struck during the final hours of this window, with the Championship side keen on the Ivorian, but a deal won't happen now.

Watson, 18, only has 18 months left on his contract at the Stadium of Light, and this only fuelled further speculation about his future on Wearside.

Aston Villa and Crystal Palace have also been linked with a move for the teenager recently, but it seems as though both teams haven't advanced their interest at this stage, with Brighton showing the most interest.

This interest has come after the winger's first-team impact earlier this term, with his brace against Stoke City showcasing his talent.

The youngster may have spent time on the sidelines more recently, but he could make a real impact for Regis Le Bris' side in the coming months, as they look to secure a Premier League return.

And at this stage, the winger looks set to remain a part of their promotion push.

Brighton and Sunderland fail to agree Tommy Watson and Simon Adingra deal

The Black Cats were interested in Brighton's Adingra, as part of a swap deal.

The Ivorian has shone at times this season, but hasn't exactly been one of the first names on the teamsheet, and could benefit from a loan move away from the Amex Stadium.

According to Romano though, a swap deal won't happen now, with the Black Cats rejecting a package worth £13m for Watson from the Seagulls.

The south-coast side were seemingly determined to get a deal over the line for the 18-year-old, but they look set to fail in this quest.

Watson is a very talented young player - and the Stadium of Light is an attractive home for the teenager to stay at.

Le Bris has given plenty of youngsters opportunities to shine this season, including Watson, who will be grateful for the first-team opportunities he's managed to get.

It wouldn't be a surprise if he put pen to paper on a new deal if he continues to be an important part of the senior squad.

And with the player only 18 at this stage, he should only get better.
