The financial disparities between FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund should make it impossible for BVB to sign a player that regularly starts for the perennial German champions.

Yet, centre-back Niklas Süle refused to sign another deal with the Bavarian outfit and joined their Black and Yellows rivals this summer as a free agent instead.

“In my career, despite all my sporting successes, I have not always been respected in the way I think I deserve,” the 26-year-old explained in the club’s magazine ‘BORUSSIA’ about his motivations to join the Westphalians, adding: “In the talks with BVB, this respect was shown to me immediately and very credibly.”

The Germany international is full of anticipation for the new season at the Westfalenstadion after 171 appearances for FC Bayern, where he won five Bundesliga titles and the Champions League. “There is no more emotional stadium in the whole world. I can’t wait to become part of this club.”

Along with new signing Nico Schlotterbeck, Süle is tasked with improving BVB’s defensive record. Bolstering the backline was sporting director Sebastian Kehl’s main objective after the club conceded 52 league goals, a new (negative) record for a Bundesliga vice champion.
