Suarez claims ‘FIFA is always against Uruguay’ with World Cup exit hinging on penalty snubs | OneFootball

Luis Suarez has astonishingly claimed that FIFA have an agenda against Uruguay and has asked for “explanations” after his side were denied two penalties.

Uruguay beat Ghana 2-0 on Friday afternoon but were unable to progress through to the last 16 of the World Cup following South Korea’s surprise win over Portugal.

12 years on from their dramatic quarter-final in South Africa, the South American and African nations faced off in this year’s tournament.

Suarez was famously dismissed for a deliberate handball on the line in the final minute of extra-time in that game.

After denying Ghana a goal and a place in the semi-final, Asamoah Gyan missed the spot-kick and Uruguay won the match on penalties.

Typically, Ghana were awarded a penalty after a foul from Atletico Madrid centre-half Jose Gimenez.

Andre Ayew – even more typically – missed the shot from 12 yards and Uruguay went on to score twice through Giorgio de Arrascaeta before the break.

Uruguay felt they should have been awarded a penalty of their own for a foul on Darwin Nunez, with referee Daniel Siebert going to the VAR pitchside monitor, but judging that Daniel Amartey got a touch on the ball.

The angry Uruguayans then felt Edinson Cavani was fouled in injury time – he definitely wasn’t, but they were still incensed and the experienced striker pushed over the monitor on his way down the tunnel after the full-time whistle.

Players berated Siebert, who might have been fearing for his life for a few minutes, after clearly feeling aggrieved by the officiating.

Suarez was so upset he slammed FIFA after the match, claiming they are “against” his nation.

“The Josema (Gimenez) penalty was detrimental to us because of the goals conceded and so was the one given to Darwin,” said Suarez.

“The people at FIFA and the Referees Committee have to give explanations as to what they are basing their decision to award the incredible penalties that are being awarded and we didn’t get two today.

“It’s not an excuse, but we also have to respond to that lack of power.

“After the game I wanted to see my children and the FIFA people told me no, when a France player was with his children on the bench. It seems that Uruguay has to have more power, FIFA is always against Uruguay.”

Korea beat Uruguay to second place in Group H on goals scored.

The South American side were beaten by Portugal on matchday two after a goalless draw against Korea.

Hwang Hee-chan’s injury-time strike was the winning goal for the Asian nation against group winners Portugal, with Uruguay throwing the kitchen sink at it late on with Suarez on the bench with Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez.
