As reported by Kicker, Stuttgart are considering a possible move for Benfica defender Tomás Araújo.

After Konstantinos Mavropanos made his move to West Ham official, Stuttgart have been on the hunt to find a replacement for the Greek centre-back. The Swabians are looking to lure a right-footed defender to the club and Araújo is seen as an ideal option.

The 21-year-old is held in high regard by both Benfica and the Portuguese national side, having represented his nation at every youth level after receiving his debut for the under-21 side in March. However, with Araújo not considered ready for consistent first-team football for As Águias, a loan to Stuttgart is on the cards.

With Benfica keen to ensure that the defender has a productive season away from the club, they are establishing who would be the best suitors for Araújo’s development. Die Roten are said to be one of the clubs eligible to loan Araújo for the season, but competition from sides in Spain and England is fierce.

As previously understood, Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards is another player that Stuttgart could turn their attention to if a move for Araújo fails. After a self-destructing performance away at RB Leipzig on Friday night, it is clear to see why added depth to the Stuttgart backline is a priority for head coach Sebastian Hoeneß.
