Southampton boss Russell Martin has provided an unfortunate injury update on Stuart Armstrong on Saturday.

The 32-year-old Scotland international was forced off on a stretcher during the final minutes of the weekend collapse at Cardiff City.

The manager then confirmed the worst possible news for both club and country.

“It’s a bad one. We’ll have to wait and see but he’s going to be out for the rest of the season,” said Martin.

“I’ve just been to see him and he’s on crutches.

“It’s a tough day for us and a tough day for Stuey. He will be missed.”

Armstrong’s serious injury will also be a huge blow for Scotland ahead of the European Championship this summer.

It could have been his final match in a Southampton shirt, too, with his contract up at the end of June.
