Yokohama FC will welcome Vissel Kobe to Nippatsu Mitsuzawa Stadium on Wednesday evening, with both sides desperate for points as they look to overcome patchy form in the J1 League.
The hosts find themselves in a precarious position, currently languishing in 18th place after a difficult start to the 2024/25 campaign. Yokohama FC have managed just two wins from their last seven league outings, most recently falling to a 2-1 defeat against Nagoya Grampus despite showing moments of promise.
Vissel Kobe, meanwhile, have struggled to find consistency this term. Their last league fixture ended in a disappointing 1-0 loss to Kashima, continuing a pattern of mixed results that has seen them alternate between impressive victories and frustrating defeats.
Yokohama FC manager S. Yomoda has concerns over the fitness of forward Kaito Mori and goalkeeper Tsubasa Shibuya, who are both recovering from pre-season injuries. Their availability remains uncertain ahead of Wednesday's clash.
The visitors are dealing with their own injury crisis, most notably the absence of defender Gotoku Sakai, who is expected to be sidelined for 6-8 weeks with a right thigh muscle injury sustained on the opening day.
For the hosts, recent acquisition Yoshiaki Komai has added much-needed creativity in midfield since arriving from Consadole Sapporo in January. His ability to unlock defences could prove crucial against a Kobe side that has shown defensive vulnerabilities.
Vissel Kobe will look to their attacking duo of Yuya Osako and Erik to provide the firepower. The latter, a loan signing from Machida Zelvia, has made an immediate impact with two goals on his debut, while the experienced Osako remains a constant threat with two goals and an assist in the league campaign so far.
The visitors have also strengthened their squad with the emergency signing of midfielder Gustavo Klismahn from CD Santa Clara, brought in to address their injury problems.
Recent encounters between these sides have typically favoured Vissel Kobe, who have generally had the upper hand against Yokohama FC in J1 League competition.
Wednesday's match will mark the first fixture under Yokohama FC's new smoke-free policy at Nippatsu Mitsuzawa Stadium. The club has announced a complete smoking ban throughout the stadium and surrounding areas as part of Yokohama City's initiative to create a healthier environment for fans.
Yokohama FC's defensive frailties have been their undoing this season, and they face a significant challenge against a Vissel Kobe attack featuring the in-form Erik and the ever-dangerous Osako. While the hosts may find some joy against Kobe's inconsistent defence, the visitors' superior firepower should prove decisive.
Predicted Score: Yokohama FC 1-2 Vissel Kobe
