Racing Club de Strasbourg have reached an agreement in principle with Premier League side Southampton FC for the transfer of centre-forward Sekou Mara (22), according to a report this Monday from Foot Mercato. Les Alsaciens‘ outlay for the Girondins de Bordeaux youth product reportedly rises to €12m. Mara joined the Saints two years ago from his formative club for a similar transfer fee. Mara struggled to make himself invaluable for the Saints and has been consistently linked with a return to France. He logged eight goals and five assists in 64 games played for Southampton FC.
RC Lens, Stade Brestois and OGC Nice were also linked with a move for Mara. The outlet understands that Southampton were initially only willing to part ways with Mara as part of a loan deal, with the player tied to the Premier League club with a contract set to expire in 2026. The Ligue 1 club’s owners – Chelsea FC’s BlueCo – have reportedly played a paramount role in Mara’s transfer to Strasbourg. Les Alsaciens were held to a 1-1 away draw at Montpellier for Liam Rosenior’s Ligue 1 debut.
