I don’t think I need to tell any of you in the north east that Storm Arwen has hit Tyneside.

If you are anything like me you will have struggled to get much sleep overnight as you lie in bed just hoping the roof is still there after Storm Arwen has had its fill.

For Newcastle fans travelling to Arsenal today, this Storm Arwen has posed particular difficulties for many.

Changing the kick-off time to 12.30pm is never a help to start with and now the weather has further made travelling a nightmare for so many.

For London games, the train is the preferred mode of transport for many (the majority?) of Newcastle supporters travelling from Tyneside.

Many of those turning up today at Newcastle Central Station finding that their London trains had been cancelled.

The latest advice / information from LNER is: ‘There are no trains running between Newcastle and Scotland today. Trains running between Newcastle and York will be delayed due to speed restrictions. LNER customers are advised not to travel today (Saturday 27 November) or tomorrow (Sunday 28 November).’

So whether those Newcastle fans who have had trains cancelled can still make it on later trains, to London / Arsenal in time, must be in severe doubt.

Newcastle United cult hero Mick Quinn is also somebody affected by Storm Arwen today when it comes to train travel. He was up in Newcastle to appear at an event on Friday night and has just posted this.

Mick Quinn – 8.14am 27 November 2021 on Twitter:

“Bumped into a quite a few disappointed Toon fans at the Station, who’s earlier London Trains were cancelled.

“My train was delayed and can only go 50mph.

“I hope I get back to see the game and let’s hope Eddie and the Newcastle United team can put a smile back on the fans faces.

Quinny is travelling back home and will get off at Peterborough, which is on the London route, travelling at 50 miles an hour isn’t a good sign for any Newcastle fans on his train if hoping to make that 12.30pm kick-off.

As for Newcastle fans who were set to drive to the match, if still doing so, please take extra care and stay safe.

Whilst LNER are saying Newcastle fans who haven’t been able to travel can claim a refund.

Here’s hoping that Arsenal will be sympathetic to any fans unable to make today’s match due to Storm Arwen affecting travel plans and offer a refund on unused tickets.

‘There are no trains running between Newcastle and Scotland today.

Trains running between Newcastle and York will be delayed due to speed restrictions.

LNER customers are advised not to travel today (Saturday 27 November) or tomorrow (Sunday 28 November).

Tickets dated Friday 26 November, Saturday 27 November or Sunday 28 November will be valid for travel between Monday 29 November and Wednesday 1 December.

Customers are encouraged to travel as close to their original booked time as possible. Seats are extremely limited on LNER services and reservations are advised. Please see here to make a seat reservation.

You may also apply for a full refund on unused tickets via the original point of purchase.’
