Despite his impressive record of four goals in five games for the country, Zinho Gano once again spent the entire game on the bench this afternoon. He watched on as his side suffered a 4-2 defeat to Equatorial Guinea. The result means the side now have to beat Nigeria and hope to somehow make it through as one of the best third placed sides.
Yet his Challenger Pro League compatriot, Ouparine Djoco, was once again in between the posts for the side. Unfortunately, he was on the other end of a remarkable performance from 34-year-old Emilio Nsue, who scored a hat-trick. It had been 1-1 at half-time, but in the second half Equatorial Guinea managed to score three without reply until Ze Turbo made it 4-2 late on. The Francs Borains goalkeeper, who is on loan from French side Clermont Foot, has now conceded six goals in two games.
Zutle Waregem’s Gano was the sides joint top scorer during qualification, although his three goals did come against the lowly ranked São Tomé and Príncipe.
