Carlton Palmer believes Derby County should strike a deal with Leicester City for Daniel Iversen.

Derby County are lining up a goalkeeper signing this summer, with out of favour Leicester City stopper Daniel Iversen on the transfer radar of the Rams.

First-choice goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith was let go at the end of the 2023-24 season, despite keeping 20 clean sheets in 40 appearances and winning the Golden Glove award for the third tier.

Not only that, but 36-year-old Scott Loach also retired at the end of the season, limiting Derby's goalkeeping options even further ahead of the 2024-25 campaign.

The Rams are preparing or their first season back in the Championship under Warne, and he knows that they will require quality players to assure safety in the second tier at the first time of asking.

It's reported that they want to sign Iversen on loan from Leicester this summer, according to a report from journalist Alan Nixon via his Patreon account.

The Danish stopper was on loan at Stoke City for the second half of the 2024-25 season, where he kept seven clean sheets in 18 Championship appearances for the Potters.

One potential issue is that it has been revealed that Iversen is set for an increase in wages following Leicester's promotion back to the Premier League, as per Nixon's report, but Derby hope that they can afford to cover enough of his salary to get the deal done.

Ex-England international Carlton Palmer believes Iversen is the right sort of player that the club should be targeting this summer, given his experience at Championship level, but expects that wages could prove to be an issue in their pursuit of Iversen.

"Derby County and Paul Warne are looking to recruit some quality players on their return to the Championship next season. One area that they need to address is the goalkeeping problem, and they are looking at Leicester's Daniel Iversen," Palmer said when speaking to Football League World.

"They will have to fork out to cover a big chunk of his salary.

"He now has significant Championship experience, with loan stints at Preston and Stoke.

"Paul Warne will be hoping that the hierarchy at the club will stick their hands in their pockets, because it's an area they need to fill having lost Joe Wildsmith.

"They would have liked to have kept him but Iversen would be a very good addition.

"He has experience at this level and it would be a very good signing for Derby County."

Given that he is seemingly surplus to requirements with Leicester once more, the most logical thing for Iversen is to head out to the Championship again; be that on loan or permanently.

There are likely to be other suitors at this level, but he is not the only option the club are targeting.

Derby have already been linked with an ambitious move for former Arsenal and Brighton goalkeeper Mathew Ryan. The Australian spent last season playing for AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands, and kept 13 clean sheets in the Eredivisie.

However, Iversen would be a great option, having enjoyed an impressive run of form with Stoke at the end of the Championship season, keeping three consecutive clean sheets as the Potters finished the campaign with three straight wins.

Iversen spent the previous season on loan at Preston North End, and kept 13 clean sheets in the Championship on his way to being named Player of the Year at Deepdale in 2022 by both his teammates and the supporters. He has proven pedigree and the right credentials to make a big difference at Pride Park, and is a superior goalkeeper to Wildsmith, too.
