As reported by Diaro AS, cited by LFC Transfer Room, Steven Gerrard turned down the chance to join Spanish giants Real Madrid on two occasions throughout his Liverpool career.

The report reveals that he rejected the Spaniards in 2005 as Liverpool famously defeat AC Milan in Istanbul to lift their fifth Champions League title before rejecting them again in 2009.

On the first occasion, Liverpool demanded €45 million plus Ruben de la Red, Alvaro Arberloa and Javi Garcia in a mega deal. Madrid, of course, did not accept the asking price with Gerrard going onto stay at Anfield.

Had the Liverpool legend joined in 2009, he would have joined up with former teammate Xabi Alonso as well as the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo to create one of the best partnerships of all time. Thankfully, for the sake of those competing for Europe’s biggest prize, the deal never happened.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

For neutrals, the prospect of Steven Gerrard playing alongside some Real Madrid greats is a mouth watering idea. For us, however, it is a frightening alternative reality. Without the iconic midfielder, who knows where the Reds would be today.

The fact he rejected a move not once, but twice just shows the loyalty that he had towards Liverpool.
