Rangers manager Steven Gerrard refused to blame goalkeeper Allan McGregor for his side’s failure to beat Hearts in a top-of-the-table clash on Saturday.
John Lundstrum gave the hosts the lead with a precise effort from outside the penalty area shortly before half time.
But despite having 27 shots (10 on target), Hearts equalised late on when Craig Halkett headed home after McGregor failed to deal with a corner.
Fingers immediately pointed to the veteran goalkeeper for his indecisive punch, but Gerrard saved his ire for the outfield players who passed up a plethora of opportunities at Ibrox.
“We have had, I don’t know how many chances, 20-25 chances, but we haven’t been ruthless enough and we paid at the end,” the former Liverpool midfielder told Rangers TV (via the Daily Record).
“That first half performance will take us where we want to get to.
“But second half I don’t think we came out with that same intent or urgency. I thought we got a bit soft as the game went on.
“The game is about both boxes. At 1-0 we have had four, five, six chances, so we’ve almost stitched Greegsy up.”
The result allows Rangers to stay top of the Scottish Premiership, but only by the bare minimum from the Jambos.
