Steven Gerrard was more than happy to take the three points after Rangers opened their Scottish Premiership campaign with a 1-0 win at Aberdeen.

A 21st-minute goal from Ryan Kent proved the difference at Pittodrie as the Gers got their bid to prevent a Celtic 10-in-a-row off to the necessary start.

After a successful pre-season, Gerrard was glad to see his side continue that form into their competitive opener.

“I thought the players, to a man, right throughout the team, were outstanding today,” the manager told RangersTV.

“It is another clean sheet which has to be our foundation.

“Clean sheets will take us to where we want to go, but I think to a man everyone has come to a difficult place today and performed ever so well.

“The only thing, if you’re picky, is we need to go and take games away from teams – so at 1-0, can we go and get that second goal?”

That comment suggests Gerrard would like more attacking options, and the former Liverpool stalwart admitted that he is still in the market to add to his squad.

“I want to try and get some new faces in the door to help us over the course of the season, but I thought in the first half we took our pre-season form into the game,” Gerrard added.

Rangers travel to Germany on Thursday looking to somehow overcome a 3-1 deficit as they take on Bayer Leverkusen in the second leg of their Europa League Round of 16 tie.
