Al Ettifaq manager Steven Gerrard has denied rumours he could make a move for Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood.

United have confirmed Greenwood, who saw charges of rape and assault against him dropped in February, will continue his career away from Old Trafford but his contract has not been terminated and so a summer transfer will have to be arranged.

90min understands Serie A side Roma have made contact alongside Inter and Atalanta, while there is also interest in Greenwood from a handful of other European countries.

Saudi Pro League director Michael Emenalo, formerly of Chelsea, is understood to be monitoring any developments concerning Greenwood.

Reports elsewhere named Al Ettifaq, who are not owned by the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), as potential suitors for Greenwood, but Gerrard has now publicly distanced his club from any such move.

Taking to social media, Gerrard posted a screenshot of an article detailing alleged interest in Greenwood with the caption "Fake news!".

United are looking to find a new home for Greenwood and would prefer a permanent transfer, not least because of the Financial Fair Play benefits that come from selling an academy graduate, but few clubs have voiced a willingness to sign the 21-year-old outright.

Greenwood has not played for United since January 2022, when he was suspended following charges from the police.
