Aston Villa head coach Steven Gerrard has confirmed that the club has a new captain in the form of Scottish midfielder John McGinn.
The 27-year-old has been named the new skipper at Villa Park, taking over from defender Tyrone Mings who previously donned the armband.
Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez will now also take over the role as vice-captain.
Speaking to the club website to explain the reason behind his decisions, Gerrard said: “John has demonstrated that he is ready to take on the captaincy through his performances on the pitch combined with his attitude and application in training.
“He is a popular member of the dressing room who sets high standards and expectations of himself.
“Naturally, I have had to have a discussion with Tyrone Mings and have explained my reasons for making this decision.
“More importantly, I believe that not having the responsibility of the captaincy will allow Tyrone to focus more on his own game which can only benefit him and the team.”
McGinn has been at Villa since moving from Hibernian in 2018 and has made over 140 appearances for the club.
