Steven Bergwijn’s agent, Nathan van Kooperen, has confirmed that Saudi Pro League side’s and West Ham were interested in the winger during the January transfer window. Bergwijn has played a vital role in Ajax’s rise from the bottom of the Eredivisie up to fifth place in the table. The captain has scored eight goals and provided five assists in 23 appearances for the Dutch giants, which led to interest from a selection of other clubs during the last transfer window.

Speaking to ESPN, Bergwijn’s agent revealed that the transfer rumours were ‘true,’ adding that there was interest ‘from Saudi and West Ham in the last transfer window.’ Van Kooperen stated, ‘Stevie is very important for Ajax at the moment, he is captain so there is nothing to complain about. We started a two year project with Ajax. What will happen in the summer we will see. He is focused on Ajax and playing in the Euro’s.’

Steven Bergwijn’s current contract at the Johan Cruyff Arena expires in 2027. That means, if West Ham or Saudi side’s decide to return in the summer, they’ll have to meet Ajax’s asking price. The 32-time Netherlands international is still only 26, with plenty more to prove in his career. Steven Bergwijn is currently out of action with a hamstring injury.
