West Bromwich Albion manager Steve Bruce has admitted that he is hoping that the club will be able to make some progress when it comes to recruiting a new striker in the coming days.

The Baggies were only able to name one senior striker (Karlan Grant) in their squad yesterday as Daryl Dike and Kenneth Zohore both missed this fixture due to injuries.

Whereas Dike is set to be part of West Brom’s plans for the future, Zohore is free to leave The Hawthorns this summer.

In the absence of this aforementioned duo, the Baggies suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Blackburn.

Goals from Ben Brereton Diaz and Sam Gallagher gave Rovers a 2-0 lead in this particular fixture.

Grady Diangana reduced the deficit in the 59th minute and West Brom went on to create a number of chances to score an equaliser.

Grant was denied by Thomas Kaminski whilst Semi Ajayi missed the target with a header in stoppage-time.

Following this fixture, Bruce made an admission about the club’s pursuit for a new striker.

Asked by the Express and Star about whether a striker will be recruited ahead of the club’s clash with Cardiff City on Wednesday, Bruce said: “Erm, ask me in a couple of days!

“I’m hopeful, we’re hopeful.

“We’re trying, we’re having to because the club has been unfortunate.

“We’ve got two big number 9s who have had a series of awful injuries which has been difficult.

“Especially the one to Dike.”

The Verdict

For West Brom’s sake, it is abundantly clear that they do need to bolster their squad in this particular position as they do not want to become too reliant on Grant.

If Grant picks up a suspension or suffers an injury in the club’s upcoming league games, the Baggies may have to turn to their academy for inspiration due to a lack of out-and-out striker options.

With the transfer window set to remain open until the start of September, there is still plenty of time for West Brom to nail their recruitment in this particular area.

However, having yet to win a game in the Championship this season, Albion will be keen to get their business done as soon as possible as this could bolster their chances of securing some results in this division.
