West Bromwich Albion manager Steve Bruce has admitted that he is facing a difficult decision regarding what to do in terms of Josh Griffiths’ immediate future at The Hawthorns.

The goalkeeper returned to the Baggies earlier this year after his loan spell at Lincoln City reached a crescendo.

With Sam Johnstone set to seal a move to Crystal Palace when his contract with West Brom expires, Bruce will use pre-season to discover who has the ability to become the club’s first-choice shot-stopper.

Griffiths could be allowed to stay at the club to compete with David Button and Alex Palmer for a place in Albion’s starting eleven.

Alternatively, the 20-year-old may be handed the opportunity to feature regularly in a lower division next season by embarking on another loan spell away from West Brom.

As per talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, Portsmouth are believed to be closing in securing a temporary move for Griffiths.

No longer able to call upon the services of Gavin Bazunu, Pompey need to add to their options in the goalkeeping position this summer and thus Griffiths could fit the bill.

Making reference to Griffiths, Bruce has admitted that he is currently contemplating about what would suit the keeper at this stage of his career.

Speaking to the Express & Star, Bruce said: “With Josh it’s difficult..

“At this moment in time, do you let him push with the other two, or do you try and find a progression because he’s played over the last couple of years?

“We’ll see what develops because what’s best for him is crucial.”

The Verdict

Given that Bruce has yet to decide what to do with Griffiths, Portsmouth may have to draft up a list of alternative options as there is no guarantee that they will be able to sign the keeper.

33 occasions in League One last season, Griffiths will be determined to prove his worth to Bruce in pre-season.

If the keeper is able to impress, there is a chance that he could go on to play for the Baggies in the Championship next season.

However, West Brom may find it more beneficial to send him out on loan again to a team in a lower division if he is unable to overtake Button and Palmer in the pecking order.
