Ajax and Feyenoord played out the rest of their suspended Klassieker with the Amsterdam giants once again imploding.
Down 3-0 before kick-off, the hosts conceded a fourth within minutes of the restarted match, leaving manager Maurice Steijn facing a hard truth about responsibility after the final whistle.
“Within thirty seconds, we conceded a great opportunity and after a few minutes it was already 0-4. Then the match was finally over,” reflected the boss.
“We are going to get things together again and continue. I am not shying away from the fact that we have to do better. I still cling to parts of the match against Olympique Marseille (3-3).
“It is also logical that there is pressure on the trainer if performance lags behind. I will not run away from that. We have to climb the rankings as quickly as possible. That is my responsibility.”
Forward Steven Berghuis echoed the sentiments of his manager, insisting this situation is tough to face but a club as big as Ajax can turn it around.
“It is clear that we are having a hard time. We are not yet seeing the development we want to see,” said the 31-year-old.
“We have enough weapons in this team. We try to empower everyone, but that’s not quite working yet.”
“It is tough, but if you can’t do that, you are not a player for Ajax. We have to be physically and mentally fresh again on Saturday against RKC to get three points.”
Looking at the Eredivisie standings, Ajax currently sit 14th in the table two points off the relegation zone.
