Stefan Leitl has been appointed as head coach for Hertha Berlin, the club from the German capital has announced this afternoon.

With a fourth consecutive defeat coming in the form of a 2-1 loss away to Fortuna Dusseldorf on Saturday, Cristian Fiel was sacked with immediate effect.

Hertha endured a dismal run of form with just 1 win in 9 of their last outings which leaves the club in 14th-place overall.

New head coach Leitl was in fact in charge of fellow 2.Bundesliga outfit Hannover 96 until New Year’s Eve when he was similarly dismissed.

The 47-year-old from Munich is back this time in Hertha colours, with a contract agreed until 2027.

"We are happy that we have been able to recruit a very experienced coach in Stefan Leitl, who knows the league very well and has proven in his previous positions that he can shape and develop teams and players.

“We are convinced that with Stefan Leitl and his assistant coach Andre Mijatović we will quickly get back on track," said Hertha sports director Benjamin Weber.
