Stefan Kuntz confirms Arne Maier as Germany U21 captain

Germany U21 head coach Stefan Kuntz has confirmed Arminia Bielefeld midfielder Arne Maier as his captain for the upcoming U21 European Championship in Hungary and Slovenia.

“In general, we have a captain in Arne Maier but we also have a leadership circle within the team because it’s not always guaranteed that six, seven or eight leading players will play,” said Kuntz. “If Arne doesn’t play, someone else will do it.”

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, the 58-year-old remained tight-lipped on who will start in goal for Germany with Lennart Grill (Bayer Leverkusen) and Markus Schubert (Eintracht Frankfurt) competing for the number one jersey.

Germany face hosts Hungary in their opening fixture tomorrow.
