His first season at Real Madrid wasn’t much to write home about but Thibaut Courtois is quietly having a very decent 2019/20.
And according to the numbers, Courtois is actually outperforming his goalkeeping rivals at Barcelona and Atlético Madrid at the moment.
For starters, the Belgian has conceded just 14 goals in LaLiga so far this term, whereas Atlético’s Jan Oblak has let in 19 and Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen has shipped a whopping 29.
Courtois has saved 76.3% of the shots on target he has faced (the joint-best record in LaLiga with Levante’s Aitor Fernández) compared to 73.6% for Oblak and just 67.9% for Ter Stegen.
When it comes to shots from inside the box, Courtois has a 72% save rate, while Oblak is on 67.5% and Ter Stegen has managed just 54.5%.
Ter Stegen has saved 85% of the shots he’s faced from outside the box, compared to 82% for Oblak.
But Courtois hasn’t been beaten at all from outside the area so far this season.
He may have been beaten by Manchester City in the Champions League last week but Courtois has saved 17 headers in LaLiga this term, compared to 12 for Ter Stegen and eight for Oblak.
So if you thought Courtois was the worst of those three goalkeepers you may have been wrong, and the 27-year-old is firmly on course to win the Zamora Trophy, which is awarded every season to the goalkeeper who has conceded the least goals in LaLiga.
