The statistics and numbers behind another strong campaign for City.

Gareth Taylor’s side signed off the 2022/23 campaign with a 3-2 home success over Everton at the Academy Stadium.

Although we fell narrowly short of UEFA Champions League qualification, there were plenty of positive signs and encouragement we’ll certainly look to build on next season.

Club goalscoring records were broken and significant progress was made on and off the field.

Look back on City’s 2022/23 term via the numbers below…

A Club record crowd for a women’s match packed into the Etihad Stadium to witness our enthralling 1-1 draw with Manchester United in December 2022.

Leah Galton gave the visitors a first-half lead, before Laura Coombs’ close-range strike levelled the scores as the spoils were shared on a historic afternoon.

The tally was a significant rise in attendance, beating the previous record by over 13,000.

GOALS GALORE

City scored a whopping 84 goals across 31 games in all competitions across the campaign, averaging a staggering 2.7 per game.

With 50 league goals, we were the division’s third-highest scorers, although our xG (expected goals) for the term with 49.5 was the highest in the division.

What’s more, our total league shots recorded of 457 was the highest across the Barclays Women’s Super League.

HISTORY MAKER

Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw enjoyed a phenomenal season in front of goal, smashing records and winning a swathe of awards.

In total, the Jamaican scored 31 goals in 30 matches, averaging more than a goal a game while also becoming the highest scoring women’s player for City in a singular season.

Her league tally of 20 league goals also saw her overtake Nikita Parris for the most WSL goals in a single season by a City player.

This electric form saw her claim the 2022 Concacaf Player of the Year award before winning the Club’s Player of the Year gong and Goal of the Season trophy.

VICTORIES

City recorded 15 victories out of 22 in the WSL which tallied 45 of our 47 points gained at the end of the term.

With that points total, we averaged 2.13 per game.

In all competitions, we recorded 22 for the entire campaign from 31 matches with five coming in the Continental Cup en route to the semi-finals and two in the FA Cup.

POSSESSION

City’s average of 61.6% possession per game was the second highest in the WSL, showing our comfortability with the ball at our feet and ability to move through the thirds accurately.

UNBEATEN STREAK

Despite strong performances in our opening two matches of the season, we fell to respective defeats to Aston Villa (4-3) and Chelsea (2-1).

However, that sparked a tremendous unbeaten run which saw us break into top four and into title reckoning.

Following our first win of the season, a strong 4-0 success over Leicester, on October 16 we then tallied 16 games without loss in all competitions.

During that time we scored 63 goals and progressed into the knockout stages of both the Continental Cup and the FA Cup.
