Shakhtar started in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Lassina Traore leading the attack for them.

Shakhtar had to replace their striker early in the game due to an injury. They brought on Tete to replace the injured Traore.

Inter started in a 3-5-2 formation with a front two of Dzeko and Lautaro Martinez.

Inter used up all their five substitutions in the second half in search of a winner.

Shakhtar Donetsk were able to dominate more possession than the Italians and also had a higher xG than them. They attempted more shots throughout the game which resulted in a higher xG for them.

Pedrinho had the highest xG for Shakhtar as he attempted the most number of shots for them. Nicolo Barella had the most shots for Inter and also made seven passes into the final third.

Shakhtar had a total of 12 shots on goal and had two of these shots on target. They had six shots taken from inside the penalty area and also had a shot saved close to goal.

Inter only had three shots taken from inside the penalty area which is why they had a comparatively lower xG than their opponents.

The xT timeline indicates Inter were able to create quite a few opportunities to threaten the opposition defence but failed to find a breakthrough. Shakhtar created the better chances in the second half and had a higher xG.

Shakhtar Donetsk were able to keep possession of the ball with ease in their own half. Their centre backs exchanged a total of 60 passes between them.

Skriniar attempted the most number of passes for Inter and completed most passes to his fellow centre back de Vrij.

Shakhtar completed many passes in the central part of the field as shown in the pass zones visual.

Inter only attempted two smart passes throughout the game and most of the through balls they attempted were intercepted by the Shakhtar players.

Shakhtar were most threatening from the right flank in the opposition penalty area. Marlon had the highest xT for them with the passes that he attempted.

Most of Shakhtar’s players were able to create a threat with their passes but at times failed to make the right move when they got into dangerous positions. Ismaily had the highest xT from the dribbles he attempted on the left flank.

Inter did manage to create a few good opportunities in the final third near the right flank. Matias Vecino created the highest threat for them with the passes he attempted from the midfield.Some of their midfielders and defenders were able to create good chances for them with the passes they attempted but Inter failed to create any significant opportunities.

Shakhtar’s defenders did attempt a few defensive duels against the Inter players but failed to win most of these duels.

Their holding midfielder, Stepanenko won most of the aerial duels he attempted and recovered the ball for his team.

Ismaily won 50% of the loose ball duels he attempted against the Inter players.

Most of the Inter players did not win their defensive duels, but Dimarco had a better success rate in winning these duels than his teammates. He won four of the five defensive duels he attempted.

Shakhtar did not have many aerial balls which is why the Inter players did not have to deal with a lot of aerial duels.

Inter were able to recover the ball with the help of 50-50 duels that they attempted. Bastoni only lost two of the six loose ball duels he attempted.

Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk both have only one point so far from the two games they have played. They will have to win their next group stage games for them to stand a chance at qualifying for the knockout stages.
